Scourge of Scaffolding

Our neighborhood favorite, AG Kitchen has closed. A staple for fresh food with friendly service. Best burgers, burritos anywhere. But. Once the scaffolding went up, the ambience changed. It’s the scourge of the UWS and beyond. Killing businesses on every block. SAD!

Pig Spotted

The Spotted Pig, trendy bistro in the West Village has been fodder for recent #MeToo complaints due to bad behavior by restaurateur duo Mario Batali and Ken Friedman. Friedman’s chef co-owner April Bloomfield parted ways with him after pretending to be oblivious to the debauched scene in the venue’s upstairs after-hours. Drugging and raping staff. Allegedly. News today that another woman may partner with Friedman to revive The Spotted Pig. Gabrielle Hamilton, author of Blood, Bones & Butter and decades-acclaimed Lower East Side gem Prune. A renegade rebel from lobster fiascos… Read more Pig Spotted

Holiday Buffet

Christmas Eve lobsters at Alicat & Joe’s. Magnifique. Bobby Van’s on 50th. Just above Times Square fray. Yet close enough to walk to see Farinelli & the King, The Parisian Woman, or Meteor Shower. The food is average, but it’s lively and fun. Plaques above our corner table featured Eric Trump and Michael Flynn. Collusion! The Milling Room proved to be better than the first time we went. Cod perfectly cooked, duck dishes excellent. A vast interesting space. Not as successful, Italian restaurants on Columbus. Tried Pappardella for a family dinner. Crowded, noisy… Read more Holiday Buffet

Autumn Palate

It’s not that we don’t go out to eat much. It’s that we rarely find the experience blog-worthy. Neighborhood restaurants remain just okay. And. Citarella’s food is just too good. Check out RecipeDetours.com. Although brunch at Tavern on the Green’s outside garden was excellent last week. On a balmy beautiful Saturday. Eggs Benedict with potatoes perfect. Ambience sublime in late October. And Harbes Family Farmstand on Long Island’s North Fork in Mattituck has even better Apple Cider Donuts than Atkins Farms in Amherst, Massachusetts. Which is saying something.

Isabella’s Bites the Dust

UWS’s landmark gathering spot the latest to close its doors. Isabella’s shuttered for good yesterday after decades of meeting, greeting and eating. One of the few outdoor cafes not blocked by shade of ugly dank scaffolding. You could actually sit in the sun. Sad.
